SCCA Time Trials Philosophy

Time Trials—first and foremost—is about the quest for speed. There is no room here for balance of performance, spec classes or slowing down the fast to make a better show. This is a place for mechanical creativity, driver development and envelope pushing.

The quest is first personal. This is much more about your experience and personal challenge than it is about winning and losing. The sport is based on creating a space where participants can push their own development and have a consistent way to measure their progress. Yes, there are classes, and yes, we will give trophies for people who do well in their class, but at the end of the day the more important questions are: did you go faster than you have before, did you learn more about driving than you knew before, did your car perform better than it did before?

This quest is also collective. It is about a community that has accepted the challenge of the track. One that believes that the battle is best fought on the same team, and that the next best thing to achieving greatness is witnessing it.

And in all of this, there is the Same Team Approach. The Time Trials program is founded on the idea that every person on site—from Event Lead to Drivers, and flaggers to family and friends—are there united in the pursuit of #funwithcars.

There are three components to our weekend:

1.      Untimed track time. This is very similar to a track day or the SCCA Track Night in America program. Use this time to become familiar with the track or more familiar with your car. Coaching will be available.

2.      Time Attack. A timed session using a portion of the track. Think one car at a time, autocross lights, standing start and a finish line about ¾ around the track. You will get several runs and best run counts. We will repeat this on Sunday.

3.      Timed Laps. We will be using transponders for the Sunday morning track session. Your best lap during the session counts.

Event FAQs

Car numbers?

Participants are required to select a number in MSR when registering online and provide a legible number on the car. These may be magnetics (provided that they are able to stay on the car at speeds exceeding 75mph), vinyl, contrasting painters tape (for example, do not use blue tape on a blue or black car, it isn't legible), or printed numbers that will be taped to the car.

Car numbers should be at least 8 inches high and 1 inch wide; the bigger, and the more space makes them more legible to our corner workers. To test, put your numbers on your car and walk back 50 feet. If your numbers are still legible then you are good to go!

How do I prepare my car for a track day?

Have your car inspected by a technician / mechanic prior to the event and have them complete the (Attached) Pre-Event Technical Inspection form.

  • Have magnetic numbers or use painters tape for numbers to identify your car on track. USE THE NUMBER YOU SIGNED UP WITH!
  • Check that all fluids are topped off, tires are up to pressure, and brake lights are functioning
  • Gas (expensive) and Air are available at the track. There are gas stations back at Phoenix Road and I-196 (approx. 5.5 miles west of Gingerman)

What should I bring with me?

  • Secure a SA or MA 2005 or better helmet
  • Tire pressure gauge. There is air available at the track
  • Engine oil. Same weight as what is currently in your engine
  • Brake fluid. Same temperature rating as what is currently in your car
  • Engine coolant or distilled water
  • Basic tools
  • Food and drinks are available at the Gingerman Cafe or bring your own drinks and edibles for the day…STAY HYDRATED

What do I do when I arrive to the track?

  • Arrive at the track either Friday after work or Saturday morning. Leave yourself enough time to get to registration. Be early so you are not rushed
  • Find a spot to paddock somewhere west of the tower, but not on the asphalt at the north end
  • Remove everything from your trunk, cabin, door pockets, sun visors etc
  • Remove the floor mats and check under the seat for stuff
  • Put #’s and class on your car
  • Go to registration in the pavilion located at the north end of the paddock. You will receive a tech sheet and a schedule for the weekend
  • Fill out your tech sheet and bring your helmet to tech at the base of the tower
  • Attend the mandatory Drivers Meeting in the pavilion
  • Get ready to have fun

How can I make sure things go right during the day?

  • Check your car regularly during the day
  • Check under the hood for obvious leaks, check all your fluids
  • Check your tire pressures before/after each session
  • Check the torque of your wheel lug nuts
  • Ask questions. We are all here to help
  • Bring food and beverage. The concession stand may be open, but be prepared just in case it’s not
